Training
Joel completed his Bachelor of Science majoring in Psychology & Neuroscience at the University of New South Wales. He then went on to complete an Honours year and then a Master of Clinical Psychology at the Australian College of Applied Psychology. Joel holds national registration with AHPRA as a Clinical Psychologist. He is authorised to provide psychological services under medicare.
Clinical Experience
Joel has had several years of experience supporting people through mental health challenges. He volunteered as a telephone crisis support worker with Lifeline in 2017. He is experienced in helping carers of individuals who have mental health difficulties, having facilitated family and carer groups for people who have a loved one with Borderline Personality Disorder and other emotional dysregulation difficulties. Joel has worked in private practice since 2021, working with chronic pain, personality disorders, anxiety, and depression. Joel also works as an embedded clinician with Transport NSW, largely working with critical incident exposure and PTSD, workplace stress, and relationship problems.
Joel primarily utilises Schema Mode Therapy for relational and trauma issues, and longer-term therapy. He also practices Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to encourage change for individuals who feel stuck.
Areas of Interest
Joel has a passion for working with individuals with relational trauma, including difficult child-parent relationships where needs were not adequately met in childhood. Joel is skilled at working with chronic pain and other health-related disorders, particularly as they often relate to psychological trauma. Joel is interested in personality disorders and working with different “parts” of the self in his practice.
Joel has been described as a gentle, encouraging, and validating therapist who prioritises building a therapeutic relationship with his clients, so they feel safe and heard. In his downtime, Joel enjoys playing the Tuba with his Brass band, going for runs, and playing video games with his friends.
